University Teaching Themes

  • Humanitarian Practice

This subject has been delivered in a variety of formats over the years. Ranging from working with RedR and industry partners including NCCTRC, the Red Cross and other NGOs in the Northern Territory. Most recently since Covid-19 a new virtual based format has been made and recognised by Simulation Australiasia for its contributions to the field.

  • International Relations and Security Studies

Beginning with an introduction to international relations theories, this subject surveys the major transformations and sources of instability with potential geopolitical significance in the US, Europe, Russia, China, the Middle East, and Australia and the Pacific Islands. This course is regularly taught by experts from CDU.

  • Real world experience

Students are placed into the working environment of a community-based, humanitarian or development aid agency either in remote, rural or urban Australia or overseas for a sustained period. Students have previously been awarded New Colombo Plan scholarships and CDU based awards when demonstrating compelling ability in the field of humanitarian and community service. Two industry placements are undertaken to achieve ACWA standard.

  • Disasters, Aid and Development

The intersection between traditional and non-traditional security challenges, development, conflict, peace and security and the role of humanitarian assistance (and evaluations about its effectiveness). Subjects of this type are delivered for both undergraduates and postgraduate cohorts.

  • Humanitarian Needs Assessment

There are various skills and abilities needed for graduates that study with us. To ensure that students are placed to succeed in research, industry and their community we review the process of HNA and impart knowledge of research methods, fieldwork research and data collection tools.
